Book Week 2026: Symphony Of Stories Outfit Ideas Without The Costume

Book Week 2026 runs Saturday 22 August to Friday 28 August, which means the parade at your school will almost certainly land somewhere between Monday 24 and Friday 28. Worth pencilling in now, because the note usually comes home about four days before.

This year's theme is Symphony of Stories, illustrated by Briony Stewart, and it is a milestone one: the CBCA Book of the Year Awards turn 80 in 2026.

The bit nobody says out loud

Book Week is wonderful. The costume is not.

Somewhere between the cardboard, the hot glue and the 9pm realisation that you own no green fabric, a lovely celebration of reading turns into a craft project nobody asked for. And the costume gets worn once.

So this is our honest position: a shirt is a completely legitimate Book Week outfit. Kids in the parade care about being in the parade. A tee that leans into the theme does the job, goes back in the drawer, and gets worn again in September.

Wearing the theme

If you want to be on-theme without decoding it, the Symphony of Stories designs do the work:

• The open book and butterfly tee - music notes and butterflies drifting off the page. The gentlest read of the theme, and the one that suits the widest age range.
• The word art tee - the theme's lines stacked into a bold typographic block. Reads as older, works well for upper primary.
